In traditional astrology, beyond essential and accidental dignities, astrologers also considered conditions of planetary sect and placement that determined whether a planet was operating in a strong or weakened way. Two such important concepts are Hayyiz and Halb (sometimes called Hayz and Halb in Latinized texts).
1. Hayyiz (Hayz)
Definition:
A planet is said to be in Hayyiz when it is placed in harmony with its sect (diurnal or nocturnal), hemisphere (above or below horizon), and gender (masculine/feminine).
- Diurnal planets (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn) prefer day charts and positions above the horizon.
- Nocturnal planets (Moon, Venus, Mars) prefer night charts and positions below the horizon.
- Mercury adapts according to whether it is a morning star (diurnal) or evening star (nocturnal).
Effect:
- A planet in Hayyiz operates with strength, naturalness, and consistency.
- It expresses its qualities more purely and easily, without conflict.
- Considered a form of accidental dignity.
2. Halb
Definition:
A planet is in Halb when it is in its correct hemisphere relative to the Sun, regardless of sect agreement.
- For diurnal planets: being above the horizon in a day chart.
- For nocturnal planets: being below the horizon in a night chart.
Unlike Hayyiz, Halb does not require alignment with gender (masculine/feminine sign). It is a simpler condition than Hayyiz.
Effect:
- Indicates a planet has moderate strength due to being in the right hemisphere.
- Not as strong as Hayyiz, but still a supportive condition.
- Helps a planet function without excessive restriction.
Comparison: Hayyiz vs. Halb
Condition | Requirements | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Hayyiz | Sect agreement + Hemisphere placement + Masculine/Feminine harmony | Stronger, full accord |
| Halb | Correct hemisphere only (day planets above horizon in day, night planets below in night) | Moderate support |
Why They Matter
- These conditions are especially important in traditional astrology, horary, and electional work, where small dignities determine success or failure.
- They explain why a planet may act “in character” or “out of character” despite other dignities.
- Hayyiz is considered a special accidental dignity, while Halb is a secondary supportive condition.
✅ In short:
- Hayyiz = Full harmony (sect + hemisphere + gender).
- Halb = Partial harmony (hemisphere only).
