Critical Avoidances I: The Void of Course Moon

A Void of Course (VOC) Moon is one of the most critical prohibitions in Electional Astrology. It occurs when the Moon, before leaving its current sign, makes no more major aspects to any other planet. Initiating any important endeavor during a VOC Moon is a fundamental error, as it signifies that the matter will lead to nothing, fail to develop, or produce no meaningful result.

Core Meaning:
The Moon represents the public, emotions, and the flow of events. When it is VOC, it has "nowhere to go." The energy of your initiated action has no channel through which to manifest and will simply dissipate. Plans will stall, promises will be broken, and the situation will remain stagnant.

Rules for Identification:

  • The condition applies only to the Moon.
  • The Moon's next major aspect must be to a planet while both are in their current signs. If the Moon changes sign before making the aspect, it is VOC.
  • Some astrologers only consider aspects to the seven classical planets (Sun through Saturn).

Examples in Practice:

  • Example: Electing a Business Launch
    • Scenario: You plan to launch your website at 3:00 PM on a specific day.
    • Chart Check: You find the Moon is at 28° Gemini and will not make any major aspects before moving into Cancer 20 minutes later.
    • Judgment: The Moon is VOC. Do not launch. The website launch would fail to gain traction, attract no significant traffic, or quickly become irrelevant.
  • Example: Scheduling a First Date
    • Scenario: You've found an evening where Venus trines Jupiter.
    • Chart Check: You discover the Moon is VOC for the entire evening.
    • Judgment:Reschedule the date. Despite the positive Venus-Jupiter aspect, the VOC Moon means the connection will go nowhere. The conversation will be flat, no spark will ignite, and a second date is unlikely.
  • Example: Signing a Contract
    • Scenario: You have a perfect-looking chart for a partnership agreement.
    • Chart Check: The Moon is VOC for the next 6 hours.
    • Judgment:Postpone the signing. A contract signed under a VOC Moon will be ineffective. Its terms may not be enforced, the partnership may not activate, or it may be voided later.
