Planets – Rulership, Detriment, Exaltation, Fall

In traditional astrology, planets gain or lose strength based on their placement in the zodiac. These conditions are called Essential Dignities and Debilities, and the four primary ones are:

1. Rulership (Domicile )

  • A planet is in rulership when it is located in the zodiac sign it governs.
  • This is the most natural and authentic position for a planet.
  • The planet functions strongly, steadily, and expresses its qualities without obstruction.
  • Example: The Moon in Cancer (its own sign), Venus in Libra or Taurus, Mars in Aries or Scorpio.

2. Detriment (Opposite of Rulership )

  • A planet is in detriment when it is in the sign opposite to its rulership.
  • This is considered a weakened, uncomfortable, or distorted position.
  • The planet struggles to express its nature and may feel "out of place."
  • It often manifests as imbalance, frustration, or overcompensation.
  • Example: The Moon in Capricorn (opposite Cancer), Venus in Aries (opposite Libra).

3. Exaltation (Şeref )

  • A planet is in exaltation when it is in a sign where its qualities are elevated and honored.
  • The planet performs at its highest, noblest, and most refined capacity.
  • Exaltation is like being a “respected guest” — not at home, but treated with great dignity.
  • Example: Sun in Aries, Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Libra.

4. Fall (Opposite of Exaltation )

  • A planet is in fall when it is in the sign opposite its exaltation.
  • This is considered the lowest, most difficult position for a planet.
  • Its energy feels blocked, weakened, or misdirected, and often struggles to manifest constructively.
  • It may create challenges, insecurities, or distortions of the planet’s natural function.
  • Example: Sun in Libra (opposite its exaltation in Aries), Jupiter in Capricorn (opposite Cancer).

🌌 Summary

  • Rulership (Domicile): Planet at home, strong and natural.
  • Detriment: Opposite its home, weak and uncomfortable.
  • Exaltation: Honored guest, powerful and elevated.
  • Fall: Opposite exaltation, weakened and struggling.
