In classical astrology, secondary essential dignities are additional, weaker sources of planetary strength beyond the primary dignities (Domicile, Exaltation, Detriment, Fall). They help determine how effectively a planet expresses its influence, especially in more nuanced or specific chart points.
Types of Secondary Essential Dignities
1. Triplicity Rulership
- Each of the four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) has three planetary rulers: one for day, one for night, and one “participating” ruler.
- Provides moderate strength when the planet is in a sign of its element.
- Example: Sun rules the Fire triplicity by day; Jupiter rules the Fire triplicity by night.
2. Term (Bound) Rulership
- Each zodiac sign is divided into five unequal segments called terms or bounds.
- A planet in its own term gains partial dignity, with some control over that segment.
- Example: Mercury rules a specific term in Virgo; Venus rules a term in Taurus.
3. Face (Decan) Rulership
- Each sign is divided into three 10° decans, each ruled by a planet according to the Chaldean order.
- A planet in its own decan gets minor dignity, giving slight support to its influence.
- Example: Mars rules the first decan of Capricorn (0°–10°).
⚖️ Hierarchy of Planetary Strength
- Domicile (Rulership) – strongest
- Exaltation – strong
- Triplicity – moderate
- Term (Bound) – minor
- Face (Decan) – least
Why Secondary Dignities Matter
- They fine-tune planetary power, especially in detailed horary or natal chart analysis.
- Even if a planet is not in domicile or exaltation, secondary dignities can enhance its effectiveness.
- They help identify subtle support for a planet, explaining partial success or hidden abilities.
