📌 General Definition
In addition to the familiar longitudinal aspects (conjunction, square, trine, etc.), astrologers also consider declination aspects. These are measured north or south of the celestial equator, rather than along the zodiac.
- Parallel of Declination (∥): Occurs when two planets are at the same declination, either both north or both south of the celestial equator.
- Contra-Parallel of Declination (⚝): Occurs when two planets are at the same declination degree but on opposite sides (one north, one south).
🔹 Parallels (∥)
- Nature: Similar in effect to a conjunction.
- Meaning: Unites planetary energies, creating reinforcement and synergy. The influence is often powerful but works in a subtler, background way.
- Keywords: Union, harmony, shared strength, mutual support.
Example: Sun parallel Venus → natural charm, artistic talents, ease in relationships.
🔹 Contra-Parallels (⚝)
- Nature: Similar in effect to an opposition.
- Meaning: Creates polarity and tension between planets, highlighting areas of conflict, projection, or balance-seeking.
- Keywords: Contrast, conflict, awareness, polarization.
Example: Mars contra-parallel Saturn → tension between action and restriction, discipline through struggle.
🔹 Interpretive Notes
- Parallels and contra-parallels are not always visible in the standard birth chart wheel; they are found in a declination table or aspectarian.
- Ancient astrologers sometimes referred to parallels as “hidden conjunctions.”
- In practice, parallels can strengthen or challenge planets just like longitudinal aspects, but on a more psychological and subtle level.
✅ Summary
- Parallel (∥): Similar to conjunction → blending energies.
- Contra-Parallel (⚝): Similar to opposition → tension or polarity.
- Often considered “hidden aspects,” adding nuance beyond the zodiac.
